ST. ROSE SCHOOL CELEBRATES CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

St. Rose of Lima School at Crofton is celebrating “Dividends for Life” this week during the national celebration of Catholic Schools Week.

“It is a time to reflect on the many sacrifices families have to make to attend Catholic Schools,” said St. Rose pastor, Father Michael Schmitz. “The benefits are life-long because the children receive a faith-based education. Children are taught religion five days a week, and reinforced throughout the day, which is important.”

Fr. Schmitz said, “We need Catholic Schools to pass along the faith to future generations in the Church.”

St. Rose School celebrates Catholic Schools Week and Family Day this Wednesday, Feb. 3, with an all-school Mass, including the Preschool students at 8:15 a.m. This Mass is planned by the faculty and will include a Blessing of Throats, honoring the feast of St. Blaisé. After Mass, family bingo will take place in the parish center. There is Eucharistic Adoration at St. Rose Church throughout the day.

On Thursday, Feb. 4, St. Rose teachers are honored with a meal for the faculty members. Finally, the week’s special activities close out on Friday, Feb. 5, with a school Mass at 8:15 a.m. Annual school scholarships will be awarded after Mass. A read-a-thon is set for 11 a.m. in the parish center. Students will be served pizza for lunch at the parish center that day. Activities culminate on Friday with a special “Hands of the Rosary” ceremony at 3:10 p.m.

The week’s activities kicked off locally when several hundred people were served at a special brunch held last Sunday, Jan. 31, sponsored by school students and parents. Monday, Feb. 1 was Community and Faith Day, with St. Rose teachers providing hot chocolate and cookies for school parents, alumni, friends and family in the school parking lot before classes. St. Rose Stars boys and girls basketball teams also played Niobrara/Verdigre in the afternoon.

Tuesday, Feb. 2 was Volunteer and Spirit Day, when the school students wrote thank you cards to school volunteers and the school was featured in a live radio broadcast on KK93 radio from Yankton.

St. Rose School, now in its 99th year in Crofton, is part of a system of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Omaha, educating over 20,000 students each year in 76 elementary and high schools. Of those schools, there are 25 elementary Catholic schools located in rural communities across the Archdiocese. The first Catholic coed school was Guardian Angels in West Point, a PreK-8 elementary school which recently celebrated its 125th anniversary.
